From the couple:

Our Story:

We met in graduate school where we were both in the psychology PhD program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We first met in a social gathering of grad students in 2013, forgot about each other, and then re-met in October 2014. Edison offered Angela free pizza, and Angela was hooked.

When Angela was in D.C. for a job interview in April 2017, Edison flew in to surprise her and proposed at a local chocolate factory, with the help of Angela‘s friends and Edison’s brother. We are grateful for our parents for their support throughout our lives, and decided to finance our own wedding.

Planning the Wedding:

The most important thing was to celebrate our marriage with our closest family and friends. And of course, donuts. The bridesmaids wore the same lavender, tea-length dress. Groomsmen wore charcoal suits and lavender ties.

A friend of Angela’s mom is a professional florist and graciously offered to arrange our flowers. Angela likes purple and left the expertise up to the florist. Angela‘s mom and the florist purchased the centerpieces (orchids) from the local farmers market.

The Wedding:

Angela‘s brother officiated the wedding and shared the detailed account of Angela‘s and Edison’s courtship. We kept the ceremony short and sweet (20 minutes). A bridesmaid and groomsman read selected passages. Our harpist accompanied the ceremony with lovely music, traditional (Canon in D) and contemporary (Game of Thrones, Edison’s favorite TV show).

Venue:

We chose Hakone Gardens for the ceremony and the reception for a few reasons. First, it is located just minutes away from Angela‘s childhood house, where her parents still live. Second, the gardens provided a beautiful, natural backdrop and serene atmosphere for the wedding. Third, the garden is a non-profit organization so 100% of the fees go back into maintaining the facilities. Decide on your top three priorities and stick with your budget!

A Love Poem For The Happy Couple:

“I love you for what you are, but I love you yet more for what you are going to be.
I love you not so much for your realities as for your ideals, I pray for your desires that they may be great, rather than for your satisfactions, which may be so hazardously little.
A satisfied flower is one whose petals are about to fall. The most beautiful rose is one hardly more than a bud wherein the pangs and ecstasies of desire are working for a larger and finer growth. Not always shall you be what you are now. You are going forward toward something great. I am on the way with you and therefore I love you.”
